Had so much fun playing in the playground early in the morning during this shoot. I love how fun and cheery, bright colors and print mixing can make an outfit.

Tip: When layering a cardigan or a sweater over a button-down, or anything with sleeves, cuff up the sleeves so you get a pop of color from the lower layer showing through.

Playing with color theory again in this outfit. Yellow and blue are part of a triad on the color wheel, which you might remember me talking about in this post. That means that they complement each other well, with a perfect balance between boldness and subtlety.

This photoshoot was also shot by the amazing Bhavna’s Photography.

Barely High-Waisted Shorts

If you can find the perfect high-waisted short, it can really do fabulous things to your legs. The trick is to find one that doesn’t cut your torso too short in the process. That’s why I’m a huge fan of the barely high-waisted short, as I like to call them. This pair is an older one from Forever 21, but there are many great ones that you can find.

I know that I’ll be wearing these well into winter because the slightly looser fit on the bottom and the tweedy texture makes them easy to pair with tights or leggings.

Blazer + Graphic Tee

I was on the hunt for the perfect interview blazer last month, and seriously I must have checked almost every single store. Excluding a stunning purple blazer which Nordstrom sadly didn’t carry in my size, the only place I found an appropriate, flattering blazer was H&M.

I love all of the little details on it. Like how it’s lined with a striped satin that peeks out when you roll up the sleeves, and how it is structured and looks significantly more expensive than it was.

Tip: Layer a blazer over a casual graphic tee to take a simple day outfit to a more dressed up level.

Also I’ve been obsessed with fishtail braids lately. I love how my highlights really accent the braid, since when I used to try braids when my hair was completely black, a lot of detail of the braid was often lost. But since my hair has so many layers right now, I have to be careful to braid very tightly otherwise by the time I get home in the evening my hair looks messier than I’d like.

Building a Wardrobe: 8 Tops Every Woman Needs

9 Sep

I know some of you have asked me for suggestions on how to put together a complete and versatile wardrobe, so I’ve started this series on wardrobe tips that I hope will help with that. Feel free to shoot any other questions you have my way!

So before we begin, I just want to clarify that these are my must haves and they’ll likely be very different from person to person depending on what you need to dress for on a day to day basis. I’d also love to hear how your requirements are similar or different from mine.

Today we’ll be covering the tops that I could not live without.

tops1

The great thing about all of these tops is they work well either tucked or untucked, and because they are on the simpler side, they can be styled in so many different ways.

For plain v-necks and scoop necks, my favorites by far are the Mossimo ones that Target carries. They aren’t too thin like some of the other ones I’ve purchased at other stores, they’re have just the right amount of stretch, they come in such a great variety of colors, and they’re very affordable. When buying this kind of t-shirt, go for something that’s fitted but not tight. If you go for one that clings to your body too tightly, the top might look good on jeans, but it won’t look as nice when you try to tuck it in.

Gold Isn't So Bad After All-8
Here you can see how I used my simple scoop neck as a base to build a fun outfit.

I have a variety of different embellished tees, some traditional t-shirts and others out of alternative materials, but this one is great because while that little extra sparkle makes it pop, it’s still a very versatile top that can go from day to night.

I’ve already gone on and on about the wonders of striped tops so I’ll just include a shot of one of my favorite striped shirt outfits and where you can find my favorite striped top.

Pink Scallops and Stripes-3

As for button-ups, they’re pretty much the dressed up version of an ordinary t-shirt so they end up being just as versatile as the typical tee. My favorites are the chambray, chiffon, an all-purpose white, and a sleeveless for more casual occasions.

A chambray button-down goes with everything and every color, just like a pair of jeans would, which makes it a necessity in any woman’s wardrobe. My personal favorite is this one from Levi’s.

Denim is a Neutral Right--4

As for a chiffon button-up, the drape makes them so flattering on almost anyone, and they’re a softer, less professional take on the traditional button-up.

A white button front shirt can be the perfect canvas to accessorize and build an outfit around, and a sleeveless buttoned top is a more relaxed take on such a top.

Where you can find these items for your wardrobe:
Plain Scoop Neck and V-Neck Tees: Target
Embellished T-Shirt: Target
Striped Shirt: H&M
Chambray Button-Down: Levi’s
White Button-Front: New York and Company/Liz Claiborne
Chiffon Button-Up : JCPenney
Sleeveless Button-Down : Express/JCPenney

I hope this was helpful to you all! Keep an eye out for more posts in the wardrobe tips series.

Been on a serious dresses kick as of late! Just the other day I was thinking to myself, Mega why don’t you have any cute summer dresses in your wardrobe (turns out this is partly because my little sister decided to “borrow” some of them and take them back to school with her). But over the last few days I’ve been finding cute dress after cute dress. You’ll see some of my other great steals over the next few days.

I grabbed this dress off the rack when I was standing in line to pay because the color was just irresistible, but when I got home and tried it on I was torn. It’s ridiculously comfortable, but it just seemed like it was a little baggy. So I added a belt to break it up a little and now I love it. It was the perfect thing to wear yesterday when spending the day out with two fantastic mothers (my own, and my nephew’s).

Tip : Never underestimate the power of a good belt. The look of this dress could be transformed completely by using a different color/style of belt instead.

I have decided that my next shopping trip will be a solely accessories one. I typically head straight for the clothing because they’re more instant gratification and it can feel like you’ve gotten more bang for your buck, but the truth is that accessories are the secret superstars. One outfit can be completely transformed by just switching out your accessories.

Of course the best accessory of all is the kind that brings a big smile to everyone’s face : an adorable baby!

This Mother’s Day I celebrated with my mom, my amazing cousin, and her 8-month-old baby boy. He is the cutest thing and I’m so happy that I get to be here to watch him grow up.

Happy belated Mother’s Day to my cousin who celebrated her first Mother’s Day as a mother, to my Mom who celebrated her 22nd, and to all the other mothers and to-be mothers out there. I know I’d be completely lost without mine (probably literally since she’s constantly finding me things that I’ve lost), and I’m sure that all of the other daughters and sons out there feel the same way, whether they say it or not. I love you Ma!

P.S: Go Golden State Warriors!

Handmade and Houndstooth

Scarf : Made by me

I normally wear this dress with a backless bra but I wanted to try something different this time. I think that in the future I’ll stick to the backless bra. I feel that the bandeau cheapens the dress a little. I’m really happy with the rest of the outfit, though. Black and white prints are really in right now and I think the scarf adds the perfect pop of color.

Tip: Invest in some printed and colored tights that are on trend for this season. They’re an easy and inexpensive way to incorporate trends into your outfits and dip your toes into something that might be a little outside your comfort zone.

The scarf I made using the GAP-tastic cowl pattern and was really such a quick and easy knit. I finished after only three days of sporadic knitting. You cast on 131 stitches onto size 13 circular needles and just keep alternating between a knit and purl stitch until you run out of yarn. I used 2 skeins of Lamb’s Pride bulky yarn and I love how soft and warm it is. If you’re a beginner knitter or have always wanted to learn, this is a great first project.
